This day in age is different from all the others because we have an advanced technology. But, because of that, our society has been known to have less communication between people. Others will say that because of our advanced technology, we have more communication methods now more than ever before. It’s both a problem and advantage to our society.
The main issue here, to many people, is the mass usage of cell phones. They are everywhere now. More than ever before, almost everyone has a cell phone. Many think that this is the main problem with younger generations. They say that they are “too involved with their screens and don’t give enough attention to the actual world.” This is not always the case.
Because of technology and mass usage of cell phones, we communicate more than ever before. It may not be face-to-face, but it’s still communication nonetheless with many different people from around the world. “Communication has gone from human contact to technological contact in no time flat” (brandandmortar). It’s verbal communication that people are really meaning in this context. It’s more convenient to send an email or a text message than to just walk up to someone and shake their hands, and introduce yourself.
Pure convenience is what drives people to use their phones more than anything else when it comes to communication. This isn’t a good thing though. We need that face-to-face communication to better our socialization skills and get farther with our experiences with people and the ‘real world.’ The better we understand people, the better we can communicate with them when it comes to a career.
Grammar skills have also taken a negative side within this new technological world. “50% of the teens said that they do not use proper punctuation marks or grammar when writing a text message or instant message; 11% of the teens think that this electronic communication has a negative impact on their writing skills” (FranAlston). The mass usage of our cell phones has made it tougher to write out in perfect grammar because we use ‘text’ talk so frequently.
However, there are major benefits to having this technology. Especially in the classroom. No more chalkboards that create dusty rooms every time the teacher erases something. Instead, we get more involved practices between the student and teacher because of the more interactive technology that is brought in. In disaster situations, communication has been enhanced because of our advanced technology. Even with healthcare this is seen (Benefits).
Just because something is bad when it comes to face-to-face communication, doesn’t mean it’s bad in every other aspect. Because of our technology, we can now send messages so much quicker and convenient for communication when it comes to emergencies, healthcare, questions, and just plain social media. It’s not always the best, but when we do use it for our ease, we think it’s great because of how much we rely on it. I would suggest getting away from technology for a whole 24 hours to see how much you rely on it.
