The Wonderful Studio Ghibli

One of the most acclaimed animation studios ever, it has made the most beloved animated films to ever reach the screen and touch millions of hearts, old and young. Learning about the Studio and the amazing Hayao Miyazaki will make people more interested in the animated works that we see on screen, but don’t really give credit to this genre.

Hayao Miyazaki is regarded as “one of Japan’s greatest animation directors” due to the compelling characters, plots and the “breathtaking animation” in his films as earned him that title (IMDb). He was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1941 and began his animation career in 1963 at the studio Toei Douga where he worked on early classics of the Japanese animation (IMBd).

From the very beginning he had an amazing drawing ability. The way he “seemingly endless stream of movie ideas he proposed” was also to be noted for his next move. In 1971, he moved to a bigger studio with Isao Takahata, then to another in 1973 where he directed his first TV series, “Future Boy Conan (1978). Then, his first movie, “The Castle of Cagliostro” (1979). The success of these, led him to make his own studio, Studio Ghibli, or Sutajio Jiburi (IMBd).

Studio Ghibli has films such as, “Spirited Away” (2001), “Howl’s Moving Castle” (2004), “The Wind Rises” (2013), and “From Up On Poppy Hill” (2011) are just a small portion of what this studio has made (Studio Ghibli Collection).

Miyazaki retired from the studio, but he has recently talked about his last film called “Boro the Caterpillar.” “…a story he’s been toying with making for more than 20 years and that he already made a short, 15-minute film about back in 2006. The story revolved around a driving bell spider who falls in love with a reluctant water strider” (Horton).

“Spirited Away” (2001) is one that sits well with audiences as their favorite due to the story of a young girl who just moved away and wants to get away from her parents. She wanders into a world filled with witches, sprits, and where humans are changed into beasts for food. The animation is so fluid and fun to look at; its no wonder its one of the best. Another favorite is “Howl’s Moving Castle” (2004). A young woman is cursed with an older body by a witch and the only way to break the spell is by an insecure young wizard and his friend, a walking castle.

To conclude, Studio Ghibli is one of the greatest animation studios out there and makes wonderfully enticing films to watch, for older and younger people. Hayao Miyazaki is also one of the best creators out there due to his ways around the drawing board and the way he can create different stories, all usually centered around a young girl who wants to be better. All in all, there is still more to see from this studio since they are partnered up with Disney, so be on the lookout.
