  • Billy Dee Williams and Star Wars

The newer Star Wars films have been promising a better return of the characters that we love but also new characters to enjoy or hate. Billy Dee Williams, the actor who played Lando in the previous films was recently portrayed by Donald Glover in the Solo film. However, there have been speculations about his return in the ninth installment. When it was confirmed that he was indeed coming back for the original role, the fans of the universe grew happy and wanted to know exactly the purpose of him coming back. Who is Williams and why was his character, Lando, so popular to the audience?

“Lando Calrissian is a smug gambler, smuggler, and overall purveyor of ill-gotten gains. He had a slim figure, and a million-dollar smile and can go toe-to-toe with Han Solo” (Smith). The character was loved by many and became a very popular one since the 80’s. After confirming his role as Lando, the internet roared in happiness since that’s the role they wanted him to return as. If you are a military brat like myself, then you are all too familiar with the travel life. Traveling and living in different countries changes your world view significantly for the same reasons why living in one place is different.

Traveling is good for the mind because it broadens your perspective of the world. It’s life experience that you can only get if you board a plane and land somewhere completely new to you. You learn to navigate and challenge the way you see and meet other people. You also learn to live in the moment. Instead of taking pictures of every little thing you see, maybe stop and take it in first or afterwards. Take it all in as you are there (Leimkuehler). Continue reading  Post ID 652

  • Wealth Disparity – A Troubling Trend

America has such a significant difference between people when it comes to wealth, or a individuals net worth and their ability to purchase anything they want. The imbalance has to do with many factors like gender, careers, race, debt, and the economy itself.

America has more income inequality than any other developed country and the gap between the rich and everybody else is significant. According to Bernie Sanders, “The reality is that since the mid-1980’s there has been an enormous transfer of wealth from the middle class and the poor to the wealthiest people in this country” (Income and Wealth). He has a plan on his website that can reduce income and wealth inequality: Demand that large corporations and the rich pay their share in taxes; increase minimum wage; making tuition free at public colleges and universities; and guaranteeing health care… (Income and Wealth). While its not that easy, its something of a solution.

Soon, all police officers will have to wear one and knowing what the pros and cons of these will ease many people’s minds.

Officers have to wear these cameras for the duration of their shift and the batters can last about 13 hours. “The devices are capable of recording high quality video, even in situations where light is compromised such as in dark, interior spaces or at night” (Police Body). A long while to look through the footage, but knowing the right time it took place and where the incident happened, the right person will know where to look.

  • Universal Health Care for the U.S.

To live a healthy life there are many things one should do – eat balanced meals, exercise, happiness, and going to your checkups. If you do fall under being homo sapiens, then you’ve been sick at least once in your life and have needed to get some sort of prescription or surgery. The cost of those might be sky rocket high if you don’t have health insurance – sometimes with health insurance, it’s still a lot for a small bottle of pills or a simple surgery. Other countries boast about their universal health care, so why doesn’t the U.S. get in on this?

Universal health care or universal health coverage “is a specific type of health care where everyone is provided coverage regardless of their income, race, age, pre-existing conditions, gender, or wealth” (What is). Basically, if you are resident of that country, then you can get health coverage. Nothing complicated about that. The purposed this type of health care “is to provide all citizens with an opportunity to obtain the health care that they may need without having to worry about financial hardship” (What is).

  • School Shooting Apathy – What Can Be Done?

Parents wait for news after a reports of a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018. (AP Photo/Joel Auerbach)

School shootings are happening more frequently and there doesn’t seem to be anything being done to really prevent them from happening. There are protests, peaceful or not, activities to ensure school shooter safety – which shouldn’t even be a problem, but kindergartners are learning how to hide in the corner of their classroom in case one does happen. Society is in full rage, but the government just leads thoughts and prays and maybe a visit.

Apathy is lack of interest or concern in anything/anyone. This case, in preventing school shootings – really any shootings across the world. Schools around the country are doing their best to have drills in response to the many shootings happening. They want to prevent any damage, so they have drills where kids are learning to stay low and quiet in the back of a dim classroom in hopes of not getting shot up. Continue reading  Post ID 652

  • Trade Wars and The Great Depression

Anyone who has ever taken a history class in middle school and maybe even elementary school, knows about The Great Depression in some aspect. Because people were putting so much into stocks and not working, unemployment rose, and production was declining – leaving the stock prices higher than their actual value. This lead to what is known as, “The Great Depression” – the worst economic decline in history. Trade wars were part of this as well due to the rising, then demeaning, cling of the world’s value on certain things which leads to tensions.

Individuals of all walks of careers were putting everything into stocks and therefore the stock market expanded rapidly. “By then, production had already declined, and unemployment had risen, leaving stock prices much higher than their actual value…The American economy entered a mild recession during the summer of 1929, as consumer spending slowed and unsold goods began to pile up” which made production slower (Great Depression). This then lead to the stock market crash of 1929 – “black Tuesday.” Continue reading  Post ID 652

People are always trying to lose weight and get into a healthy lifestyle these days and the effects on the body can range from good to bad – depending on what their diet and new lifestyle contains. Calorie restrictions and fasting can have similar effects that can be good or bad, depending on how they do it.

Calorie restriction is simply reducing the amount of regular calorie intake by 30-60%, while still “maintaining a diet that provides enough nutrients to prevent malnutrition” (Edward). The article also states that “[s]scientists believe calorie restriction stimulates a defensive state designed to help an organism survive environmental and metabolic adversity” (Edward).
